Ampareen warns of disciplinary action against culprits

Probe committee report on pregnant woman's death in Jowai yet to be tabled

Shillong, June 17: Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said on Tuesday that disciplinary action would be taken against those responsible for the death of a pregnant woman in a hospital in Jowai.

Pynche Bareh and her unborn child died at the Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Jowai on June 4. She was from Jalaphet village in West Jaintia Hills. The West Jaintia Hills district administration constituted an inquiry committee to find out the reason behind the deaths.

“We are still waiting for a committee to submit its report to the department. If there is negligence, those responsible will have to face disciplinary action,” Lyngdoh said.

Lyngdoh said the family of Bareh has approached the court, and the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission has also sought a report on the incident.

“We will wait for the hearing, we will wait and submit our response to the MHRC, and we will see how things unfold from here on,” she added.

The government will set up a committee to prepare reports on the case to submit to different agencies.

“We highly regret that such an incident took place and as a state, we have to ensure that such incidents do not happen in the future,” she said, adding that the state has various schemes to combat maternal mortality rate.
