Architect calls for bamboo structural engineering
Three-day conclave of architects begins in Shillong

Shillong, April 3: Eminent architect from Arunachal Pradesh Techi Gubin advocated for bamboo based architecture with modern technology in the North East as he inaugurated a three-day conclave of architects here on Friday.
The Padma Shree awardee architect turned social worker said, given the abundance of raw materials and traditional expertise in North East, the government should bring in modern bamboo architecture technology to the region for creation of better sustainable structures.
Addressing the gathering of around 175 architects and allied professionals, he reminded the young architects of having a profound responsibility to “create structures that breathe”.
“Architectural designs should honour heritage while meeting the needs of tomorrow,” he said in the conclave organised by the Association of Architects, Assam at Courtyard by Marriott, Shillong.
The central theme of the second edition of AAA Conclave 2026 “Regionalism in Architecture – A New Paradigm” will explore context-sensitive design approaches and evolving architectural identities in the region.
Envisioned as a significant regional professional platform, the conclave has brought together architects and allied professionals from across the Northeastern states.
The event aims to foster meaningful engagement in contemporary architectural discourse, encourage exchange of ideas, and strengthen inter-state collaboration within the architectural fraternity.
Prominent architects participating in the three-day conclave includes internationally acclaimed Sri Lankan architect Palinda Kannangara, Amritha Ballal, Abin Choudhuri, and Sanjay Mohe among others.
AAA convenor Pankaj Phukan said, “This is the second edition of the AAA Conclave. The first edition held at Kaziranga was a huge success. This platform brings architects together, creating opportunities for meaningful interaction, collaboration, and exchange of ideas that contribute to the growth of the profession in the region”.
