Woman’s murder
After a woman was found dead inside a drain in Um-im, Umtyra village, East Jaintia Hills on July 19, the district police arrested an accused.
A complaint was lodged by the brother of the victim leading to the arrest of Hedstar Dohtdong (42) of Pyrda village in West Khasi Hills.

Nongrah case
On the Nongrah case where two siblings were killed by their father, Ampareen said the social welfare department informed that the process of releasing the ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh to the family will be done in the next 10 days.
“The status of the case is also on a very positive foot because we are told that the police are way ahead in the collection of evidence and presentation of the case on behalf of the two victims who lost their lives,” she said.
Member of the committee and Mawsynram MLA Himalaya Shangpliang said the social welfare department has been asked to take care of the mental health of the mother of two siblings and her sister.
“We did mention specifically to the one-stop crisis centre and also to the social welfare department to go into the details and submit a report within one weeks’ time as to what steps the government and the department have taken to ensure a better mental health of the two women,” he said.
Teenage pregnancy
On teenage pregnancy in the state, the chairperson of the committee said, “We have requested the police, social welfare department, women’s commission, child protection commission to all get together and aggressively handle and combat the rising teenage pregnancies in various parts of the state of Meghalaya.
Security service
Shangpliang informed that the panel also summoned a few ex-service men agencies who are providing security services in IT sector, hospital sector and also in the North Eastern Hill University.
This was after several complaints were received that people working under such agencies are not being taken care of by their employers. The employees were not granted maternity leave and other benefits.
“However we have to stop as we wanted their owners to come, not their employees who are looking after their human resource department,” he said.
“Therefore, we will be calling all of them along with the labour department on August 8″, he added.
