Balen Shah defeats Oli, set to be next Nepal Prime Minister

Shillong, Mar 8: Rapper-turned-politician Balendra Shah, a popular figure among the GenZ members, has defeated former Prime Minister KP Oli in his parliamentary constituency Jhapa.

Shah’s Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RSP) is set to win the general election held on March 5. He is likely to be the new Prime Minister of the Himalayan country.

Last September, Nepal erupted in violent protests by members of GenZ against the widespread corruption in the political system and police high-handedness. When Meghalaya Monitor visited Nepal in December, the mood was in support of Shah and his party. Young and middle-aged voters wanted the current disposition to go.

The 35-year-old politician, who was the mayor of Kathmandu, received 68,348 votes as against Oli’s 18,734. So far, Shah’s party has a majority, and there is apossibility of its landslide victory.

Shah’s rap about the political corruption went viral in February just before the elections.
