Betel nuts worth 24 lakh seized in border

Shillong, Jan 8: The BSF and the Meghalaya police have jointly seized betel nuts worth Rs 24 lakh from South Garo Hills.
In a statement, the BSF said on January 7, acting on specific tip-off, the troops of 43 Bn BSF and Meghalaya police seized more than 11000 kg of dry betel nuts worth Rs 24 lakh which were smuggled to India from Bangladesh.
The joint operation was carried out inĀ Dampukaphal under PS- Rongra, South Garo Hills. The betel nuts were being carried in three trucks when intercepted and confiscated by the BSF, although the drivers of the vehicles escaped.
The PRO BSF Meghalaya thanked the Meghalaya police for their participation in the joint operation, and said such operations will continue in future with an aim to have a crime- free International border.
