Shillong, Apr 2: National People’s Party (NPP) spokesperson H M Shangpliang has said the NPP and the BJP are not the same.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Shangpliang said it was because of the NPP leadership that the state of Meghalaya was exempted from the purview of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Shangpliang said there is nothing new to say that the BJP and NPP are in alliance in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
“Now, when the NDA was formed, the NPP was already in alliance with the BJP in the Centre and you could also witness the same in the state with MDA-1, we had the BJP and the NPP and other parties like the UDP which had formed the government. Similarly, again in MDA 2, the BJP is part of the alliance in the government,” he said.
Earlier, more than hundred supporters of three political parties – Congress, TMC and UDP – from Mawryngkneng joined the NPP.
They were welcomed by NPP spokesperson, KHADC CEM Pyniaid Sing Syiem and other party leaders at a meeting held at the state party office here.
Shangpliang said, “More than 100 of them who have enrolled themselves as members of the party today and we are happy to learn that leaders of the Congress have informed the meeting today that they were impressed with the leadership of Conrad Sangma and Prestone Tynsong and seeing the kind of development that this party and the government under the leadership of Conrad K Sangma has given to the length and breadth of the state and particularly in Mawryngkneng.”
“You see in the last few weeks you must have witnessed hundreds and hundreds of workers of other parties joining the NPP. To start with Batskhem Ryntathiang, Mairang MDC and he along with his followers had joined the party. Then again, it was followed by the MDC from Mawkyrwat Carnes Sohshang and his followers then we also saw an ex-MDC of Nongpoh Rona Khymdeit from Congress along with her followers, then again we saw just few days back district president of UDP in Ri Bhoi along with his followers joining the party and just day before yesterday, we saw more than 200 Congress workers from Mylliem constituency joining this party. That just goes to show that the NPP is growing from day to day because these people have seen that the only party that has stability, the party that can be trusted and the party with confidence is the NPP,” he said.
