Body of MeECL engineer exhumed in Tura

Relatives wanted decent burial, against tight security

Shillong, Aug 24: The body of MeECL engineer Bob Marley Sangma was exhumed on Tuesday in Tura, West Garo Hills.

The exhumation was necessitated after the victim’s sister, Tangme Marchina Sangma, alleged that her brother died mysteriously and it was not suicide as earlier concluded by his wife and the police.

Besides inquest, postmortem was also conducted at the site as ordered by the local court on August 17.

There was a delay in completing the formalities due to the confusion over the burial of the body after the post mortem.

Later, the body was buried at the same place after completing legal formalities though the relatives wished to have the burial at Baghmara where his parents reside.

Security personnel during the exhumation of the body

According to the relatives, the matter was taken up with the court as the police insisted that the body cannot be transported to Baghmara though the court order was silent on this aspect.

The exhumation of the body started at around 10.15 am and continued for a few hours.

The relatives alleged that the SP warned Rev Frithing D Sangma, Hawakhana Baptist Church not to allow the family members to transport the body for a proper burial since it was a criminal case.

Since the victim’s body was buried at an isolated site of the community graveyard in Tura where people of unnatural deaths are buried, the Maharis had filed a petition in the court for a decent burial at a proper site.

Later , the Nengminja Mahari allowed the burial to take place at the same place to avoid any delay.

The presence of large number of security personnel during the exhumation of body had also irked the relatives.
