Body recovered from abandoned coal mine in East Jaintia Hills

Shillong, May 10: A male body was recovered from a coalpit in East Jaintia Hills on Sunday (May 10)

Police said on l May 9, information was received that the body was spotted in an abandoned coal mine in Moolait Bri Sumer village, East Jaintia Hills.

On receipt of the information, a spot inquiry was conducted and found the body in a floating condition and it could not be retrieved on May 9 as the mine was deep.

Police said that on Sunday, the State Disaster Response Force ( SDRF)  reached the site, and retrieved the body. The identity of the deceased could not be ascertained, police added.

Police said the identity of the person will be known only after receiving the postmortem report.

The postmortem was done on Sunday.

In a separate statement, S.S L. Marshillong, Deputy Controller of Civil Defence West Khasi Hills , said upon receipt of information on May 9 evening regarding the presence of the body inside the abandoned coal mine at Mulaibrisumer village under Mooriap Border Out Post, East Jaintia Hills District, a team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) was immediately mobilized for  recovery operations.

The SDRF team, led by Sub-Inspector D. Kharbhih, departed from Headquarters at 5:30 am  on May 10 and reached the incident site around 10:30.

Immediately upon arrival, the team commenced the rescue and recovery operation.

With the assistance of the QRT Civil Defence Khliehriat, three SDRF personnel, comprising of G/M F. Shangrit, G/M A. Dhar, and G/M M. Chyrmang, descended into the abandoned coal mine with the support of a crane system to retrieve the floating body.

The team successfully recovered the body aged between 30–40 years of age around 11.15 pm.

Following the retrieval operation, the body was handed over to the police authorities for further  legal formalities and investigation.
