BOOK REVIEW: An insight into data & communication

New book a guide to build strategies for better communication, governance based on data science

Dr Neeta Verma, the director general of the National Information Centre, wrote in one of her articles, “… data is not a recent discovery. However, it has taken the center stage in recent times and is a key discussion point of any deliberation be it in government, industry, academia, or startups.”

Data has been empowering governments and private organisations with insights. This is improving risk mitigation and decision-making. Data is also helping to better the communication system. As Dr Annapoorna Ravichander, former executive director of Public Affairs Foundation (PAF), a Bengaluru-based think tank, observes, “… communication and data analytics often are like two sides of a coin.”

In her new book — Musings, Anecdotes & Experiences — Ravichander delves into the importance of data science in communication and governance. She explains how automated information, data analytics and creativity can help any entity and individual improve communication and policymaking.

In the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, the author recollects how data helped identify affected areas in Bengaluru. “In recent times, the Government of India and governments from all over the world have stressed the use of data, especially in the context of T20. Hence, using data creatively, we were able to ease some of the larger issues to tackle the pandemic,” she writes.

Ravichander stresses the need for policymakers to understand the importance of data and data analytics for better decision-making and implementation.

Communication strategies

The book, a collection of articles, also looks at other facets such as communication and policy engagement and the various tools for communication. Over the years, Ravichander has written about improving and improvising the modes of communication by using new-age tools and methods. The articles bring together the anecdotes and help readers understand the values.

The author shares the three-pronged PAC research strategy, involving awareness, advocacy and action, to help understand how a successful research programme can be obtained. “A well-planned research programme will ensure sustainability and leave behind its impact,” she writes.

Her insight into using case studies in training programmes is precise and strategic. She also defines the different forms of case studies and how these can be helpful in communication.

Ravichander has vast experience in research and communication and worked closely with policymakers and state governments, including Meghalaya. Her articles, which outline specific strategies, are enlightening for young researchers, communicators and common readers. The insights will not only help academicians and policymakers to better their communication and governance but also guide laymen in bettering their ways of dealing with crises. It is up to readers how they use and analyse the data provided in the book to enhance their strategies in life.
