Broken roads trouble Khliehriat residents; JNC approaches PWD

Shillong, Feb 17: Members of the Jaintia National Council (JNC), Khliehriat Circle, have raised concerns over the deteriorating condition of village roads in the town and formally urged the Public Works Department (PWD), Khliehriat Division, to take immediate remedial action.

JNC general secretary Symboh Baiar Sumer on Tuesday said several village roads in the town are currently in a dilapidated state, marked by potholes, uneven surfaces and prolonged lack of maintenance. These conditions have caused significant inconvenience to residents and pose serious risks to public safety. Pedestrians, schoolchildren, senior citizens, and patients are among the worst affected, while frequent traffic congestion has become a daily issue.

“The situation worsens during the rainy season due to waterlogging, muddy road surfaces, and an increased risk of accidents and vehicular collisions. The poor road conditions have also resulted in regular damage to vehicles and have disrupted normal economic and social activities in the area,” a statement from JNC said.

It has demanded immediate inspection of village roads in Khliehriat Town, prompt initiation of repair and resurfacing works, and a timeline for completing work.
