BSF seizes betel nuts worth Rs 11 lakh
Shillong, April 16: The BSF has seized more than 5000 kgs of betel nuts worth Rs 11 lakh on Saturday.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the BSF said the troops of 43 Bn BSF Meghalaya detected the movement of betel nuts which were smuggled to India from neighboring Bangladesh.
The operation was carried out in the general area of Dampukaphal under PS- Rongra, South Garo Hills. The betel nuts were being carried in 2 vehicles when intercepted and confiscated by BSF, although drivers of the vehicles managed to escape.
Earlier on April 9, the troops of 172 Bn BSF Meghalaya intercepted a cvil bus and seized a huge quantity of Burmese betel nuts worth Rs 12 lakh from Umkiang area of East Jaintia Hills. Four persons were also apprehended including driver & co-driver because neither they justified the presence of betel nuts in the bus nor they produced any valid documents regarding the consignment.
The apprehended persons had revealed that they were coming from Tripura and consignment was being taken to ISBT Guwahati.
There were more seizures of betel nuts this year.
On April 4, the troops of 172 Bn BSF Meghalaya seized a truck carrying processed betel nuts worth Rs 1.12 crore from Umkiang area.
They were coming from Myanmar.
The BSF said this was the third consecutive seizure of huge quantity of betel nuts from the same area.
On January 7, the troops of 43 Bn BSF and Meghalaya police seized more than 11000 kgs of dry betel nuts worth Rs 24 lakh which were smuggled to India from neighboring Bangladesh.
The seizure was from Dampukaphal area under Rongra police station, South Garo Hills.
