Shillong, Nov 17: Revellers witnessed the first MMA cage fight on the concluding day of the Cherry Blossom Festival on Saturday.
Both national and international players participated in the event. There were 10 fighters from Meghalaya, among which two from Happy Red Rooster (HRR) were the winners. Darren Kharshandy and Ribhalang Sunn beat their opponents Liannum from Manipur and Siksha Goswami from Uttarakhand, respectively.
The crowd at the cage fight was impressive and the state players found a strong home support. The other winners were Donbestar Syiemlieh, Ajay Singh Dhoni, Mangesh Sapte, Lalhmangaihzuala, Pankaj Das, Raymond Bina, Iotilyn Wankhar and Nikam Dada.
Earlier, HRR coach Isaiah Kharmawphlang told the media that local events such as the one at the Cherry Blossom Festival would help state players gain popularity among the youth.
