
Shillong, July 11: Five persons, including two who had rushed to rescue the victims, died of suffocation in a dug-out well on Friday (July 10) in Lapalang, here.
East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said that around 7.30 pm, 4 labourers working in a well in Lapalang at a private construction site under Rynjah Police Station, suffocated by the smoke from the generator sucking out the water .
While one labourer managed to escape, two others, who were brothers from the neighbourhood went to help the trapped three victims but they also got stuck and died .
All the five bodies had been retrieved by the State Response Team . They were taken to NEIGRIHMS but declared brought dead. A case was registered vide Rynjah PS Case No.106(1)/125(a) BNS R/w Sec 51(b) Disaster Management Act 2005 .

An official with the district administration said that the sector magistrate has filed an FIR against the owner and the contractor for negligence.
