CBI may probe doctor’s rape & murder case if state police fail

Mumbai medics to go on strike to show solidarity with protesters in Kolkata

Kolkata/Mumbai, Aug 12 (UNI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday assured the bereaved parents of the female medic who was allegedly raped and murdered on Friday to CBI if Kolkata Police failed to solve it by Sunday (July 18).

“I want the police to arrest the culprits. There are some insiders. If the police can’t solve the case by Sunday, then we will hand over the case to CBI. We have nothing to be bothered about. However, the rate of success in CBI investigations is very poor,” said Banerjee after meeting the victim’s family at their residence in North 24 Parganas district.

“Nurses were there, the hospital’s security personnel were also there. I fail to understand how this happened. The (victim’s) parents told me somebody from inside was involved. The police will talk to everyone,” she added.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) on Monday announced that doctors at civic agency-run hospitals in Mumbai will go on strike and suspend non-emergency services from Tuesday as a show of solidarity with Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College resident doctors who are protesting against a colleague’s rape and demanding better security for doctors.

The association also condemned the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor during her 36-hour shift on Friday. The statement released by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) MARD on Monday said, “We BMC MARD announce the suspension of elective/non-emergency medical services by resident doctors from 8 am on August 13 until the acceptance of demands of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College residents, immediate appointment of a central agency to investigate the case, establishment of a Central Protection Act, an immediate audit and recruitment of the security measures (MSF and BMC) at all medial institutions and that of a detailed report on the total number of CCTV cameras installed in respective hospitals are met.”

As many as three public interest litigations (PILs) have been filed in the Calcutta High Court over the alleged rape-cum-murder of the second-year post-graduate medical student. The three pleas were mentioned before a Bench comprising Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya are likely to be taken up on Tuesday.
