Central agency should act against illegal coal mining

Shillong,June 6: Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma has reiterated his demand for an independent inquiry into the illegalities linked to coal mining and coke plants running in Meghalaya.

In response to a question on action by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which recently seized Rs 1.58 crore during raids linked to illegal coal mining, Mukul told reporters on Friday that the ED unearthed financial trails and evidence pointing to a structured racket involving shell companies, unregulated trucking, and cash transactions per truckload of coal.

“Therefore, ED having come up with these findings, it is time for the government of India now to go for independent inquiry because this scale of illegality as reflected by the ED reflects that it has gone beyond the boundaries of Meghalaya state,” Mukul said.
