Centre to form panel to address Sixth Schedule amendment issues
Leaders of 10 ADCs meet Amit Shah in New Delhi
Shillong July 25: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has set one month’s time to address the problems faced by the ten autonomous district councils (ADCs) regarding the amendment of the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India.
KHADC CEM Pyniaid Sing Syiem said a committee headed by the union minister of state will address the amendment of the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution.
The ten ADCs have different problems and different demands and these were discussed on Thursday during the half an hour meeting with Shah.
He said the leaders of ten ADCs will meet in Shillong on August 10, to discuss the need to strengthen the ADCs.
Chairman of The Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance Pradyot Manikya Deb Barma said, “We are happy that the home minister has assured that in the next one month they will be addressing all our issues which means by August 25 and he has assured that if the agreement was signed when another government was in place, any commitment given by the government of India on any accord or any agreement will be honoured because whatever the agreement by BJP or Congress is by the government of India.”
“We are also very happy that a positive attitude was taken by the home minister and we are hopeful because the councils may be different I heard you asked question what is 125th amendment mean – it may mean something for the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo Hills, it may mean something for BTR, for Karbi Anglong – but all our problems will be individually heard by a committee and they will be addressed so that there is a solution, which is amicable. The most important thing is we don’t want to go into confrontation, we want to give rights to our people, our community and if this is how we progress, we welcome it in a positive manner,” he said.
