Challenges ahead for a spit-free Shillong
Shillong, Oct 1: Challenges are ahead to make the city free from spitting.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah hinted this at an event to create awareness on the need to maintain hygiene by avoiding spitting in public places.
The Innerwheel Club of Shillong organised a silent public rally with the theme of making Shillong a spit-free city, on September 30.
The cause was supported by Inner Wheel Club Pine City and Pune based Sare Jahan Se Acha Foundation.
The district administration wanted the collective efforts of all sections of people to ensure a city free from spitting.
According to the deputy commissioner, the government alone will not be able tacke the issue.
“Awareness campaign is a starting point for the citizens to come together to ensure a clean city. It is not just about our own homes but the focus should be on the city too. The efforts of the Inner Wheel Club should continue”, she said.
Kurbah flagged off the rally that began from Shillong Club to Khyndailad where various schools staged road shows on the anti-spit campaign. The students of various schools participated in the rally and carried posters and slogans.
The students of BK Bajoria School and Laban Bengalee Girls’ Higher Secondary School presented dance and skit respectively.
The couple Raja Narasimhan and Priti Raj of Sare Jahan Se Acha Foundation from Pune said, “No ifs no buts, spit free Shillong is a must”.
The couple has been campaigning for the cause since 2010.
They drive a car with cleanliness messages pasted on it.
“We have already covered other states in the country and our current target is Northeastern states”, Priti said.
