CM justifies MoU on border agreement

Shillong, March 31:Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has justified the MoU on border agreement and downplayed the criticism from pressure groups and the Opposition.

While HNYF, HANM, HYC and FKJGP had rejected the border deal, the AITC said the border residents will be the sufferers due to the deal.

The newly formed VPP headed by Ardent Basaiawmoit had sought a white paper on the matter.

Speaking to reporters, Conrad wanted the Opposition and others to support the initiative of the government.

To a question, he said the Survey of India has been asked to coordinate with Meghalaya and Assam for joint surveys before a Bill to redraw the boundary of the two states is introduced in the Parliament for its consideration.

“Once the process is completed, we expect the Parliament to put the final stamp on it,” Sangma said.

Earlier in the day, deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong criticised AITC leader Zenith Sangma for visiting areas of difference to take political mileage.

HNLC talks 

Conrad said positive steps are taken by both the interlocutors and the HNLC to carry  forward the talks.

To a question on HNLC appointing HNYF leader Sadon Blah on its behalf, Sangma said  interlocutor has started the of calling different individuals to coordinate the discussion.process

Sangma refused to divulge any further information fearing that it will only jeopardise the overall discussion.

He said the important part is that the process has started and the process will continue and that step by step it will be taken up to the next level.
