On Friday, VPP leaders led by Ardent Basaiawmoit staged a protest at Malki ground against price rise and demanded a probe into variation in the price of commodities in Shillong and other Northeastern states.

According to Ardent, the VPP resorted to protest as he was not allowed to raise the issue in the Assembly.

While the protest was on, Ymbon called a press conference to state that the price of commodities is under control.

The food and civil supplies department released a data from ‘various sources’ which stated that the price is not high as projected by the VPP.

However, neither the minister nor the department officials made it clear whether any fact finding team was sent to different states in the North East to compile a comparative data on price rise.

Ardent said the party had deputed people to compare the price of goods in Assam, Mizoram and Nagaland and the result was that Shillong price is exorbitant than other states.

When questioned, Ymbon claimed that  absence of railway and diversion of vehicles from Umiam bridge may be thr reasons for variation in the prices of vegetables and meat.
