CM rubbishes report on uranium mining in Garo Hills

Shillong, Oct 15: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has rubbished reports of uranium mining in Garo Hills.
According to the chief minister, there is no evidence or information to support such claims.
“There is no kind of evidence or any kind of information that has to reflect that any kind of such activities are going on,” he told reporters on Wednesday.
In response to the recent allegations made by BJP MDC from Tura Bernard N Marak, Conrad asked the leaders making allegations to come forward with details and proof, promising that the government would take immediate action if evidence is found.
“Leaders in responsible positions should not just come up with statements just because they want to grab attention or maybe just make statements,” he said.
“If it is real, then definitely it is a matter of concern, and if it is so, let them come out with the details and the proof, and definitely if there is any such thing or problem, Meghalaya will be the first one to act on it.”
Asserting the government’s firm stance against uranium mining, Sangma said, “I have made our position very clear that we are firm that uranium mining should not take place.”
“There could be situations where some incidents could be there, which may not have come to the notice of the Government, so if there is and if the evidence is there and if the information is there, then please give that to us, we will be more than happy to act and take necessary action on it.”
