CM takes up border issue with Assam counterpart

Shillong,July  2: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has taken up border unrest with his Assam counterpart in the context of alleged encroachment of Assam in Lapangap area of West Jaintia Hills.

“A telephonic discussion was there between the two on the issue,” Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong told reporters on Wednesday.

Tynsong said that the inter-state border is generally peaceful, with specific efforts being made to improve the situation in Lapangap.

Tynsong said a temporary police camp has been set up in Lapangap with around 30 police personnel  keeping vigil 24/7 to maintain law and order.

Assam has also deployed a similar number of personnel on their side of the border.

He expressed confidence that the situation is improving and that the chief minister will pursue the matter  with his Assam counterpart to further resolve any outstanding issues.

On a permanent police camp, Tynsong said that the possibility of converting the temporary camp into a permanent one would be examined once the situation calms down and becomes conducive.

“For now, the temporary camp is aimed at addressing the immediate security concerns in the area”, he said.
