COCOMI criticises central forces after killing of Meitei man

Imphal, Jan 22 (NNN): Following the killing of a Meitei man in Kuki-Zo-dominated Churachandpur district on January 21, the Co-ordination Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) asked the central security forces to withdraw “if they are not in a position to protect citizens”.

Mayanglambam Rishikanta (38) from Kakching district was reportedly abducted by armed men from Tuibong area of Churchandpur district on January 21. His body was found later in the same district.

Strongly condemning the incident, COCOMI convenor YK Dhiren on Thursday demanded that if the central security forces are unable to ensure the safety of the people, they should withdraw from Manipur. The COCOMI leader also demanded that the government take up effective measures so that innocent lives are safe. Dhiren also said inspite of the presence of a large number of security forces in the state, unwanted incidents continue to occur.

Meanwhile, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed in connection with the abduction and killing of Rishikanta demanded that the case be handed over to the NIA.

Meanwhile, locals of Kakching Khunou protested on Thursday against the killing of Rishikanta.

Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM) also condemned the abduction and killing of Rishikanta. TIM said this “barbaric and premeditated attack” occurred despite a significant presence of security forces and prior approval from the militant group Kuki National Organisation (Suspension of Operation group operating in the area) and Tuibong authorities for Mayanglambam’s visit, “highlighting the reckless lawlessness and brutal extremism that continue to threaten the region”.
