Concern over plight of people at Mawshbuit defence land

Shillong, Sept 9: Inability of the people to walk through the defence land at Mawshbuit was raised by VPP MLA from Mawryngkneng Heavingstone Kharpran.
During the Question Hour, Deputy Chief Minister in charge of PWD (Roads), Prestone Tynsong, said the state government has announced plans to construct an Eastern Bypass from Sohryngkham to Mawshbuit and Mawlynrei, aiming to reduce congestion in Shillong city. The proposed 9.95 km road will enable commercial vehicles to bypass the city, alleviating traffic woes.
Tynsong said the project is part of a permanent solution to resolve issues related to the road from Mawshbuit to Happy Valley.
The 58 Gorha Training Centre (GTC) has erected a gate on this stretch, affecting residents of Mawshbuit village.
Tynsong informed that the government has received a gift deed from the village authority, offering land for the alternative road.
“We had taken a rough survey, and the distance from Mawshbuit to Mawlynrei is 4kms. However, 300 meters of this stretch falls under the defence land. We are talking with the defence authority to ensure we can touch this land for the construction of the alternative road,” he said.
“I request the MLA (from Mawryngkneng) to be part of it. Again, from Sohryngkham to Mawshbuit, if we get land and from Mawshbuit to Mawlynrei, this will be called the Eastern Bypass,” Tynsong said.
He said if completed, the commercial vehicle will not need to enter Shillong.
Regarding the 600-meter road from Mawshbuit to Happy Valley, which falls under the defence authority, the deputy chief minister stated that the government will take up the issue with the defence authority to repair the road, which is in a deplorable condition.
“If the defence authority is not willing to undertake the repairs, the state government is prepared to do so,” he said, adding that soon the government will get the no-objection certificate (NOC) from the defence authority for repairing the 600-meter road.
Tynsong said that the government is committed to finding a permanent solution to the issue, ensuring that Mawshbuit village no longer faces problems related to the road.
