ACHIK said as an organisation and on behalf of the global Garo community, it is writing  with deep concern and dismay over the brutal attack on two Garo families, including  Bisso Mree, Eva Mree, and Stanton Mree, in Babelakona, Bangladesh, on October 15.

“The heinous nature of this assault has not only shocked the Garo people but also raised significant concerns about their safety and well-being in Bangladesh”, the organisation said

The Garo people, being one of the indigenous communities in Bangladesh, have long contributed to the nation’s cultural and social fabric. However, incidents like these paint a distressing picture of the insecurity and violence that indigenous communities continue to face. Such attacks are not only a violation of basic human rights but also an assault on the dignity and existence of the Garo people, it said.

“We strongly condemn this brutal act and demand that the perpetrators be brought to justice without delay. Immediate and impartial investigations must be carried out to ensure account ability and to prevent future occurrences of such violent attacks against the Garo community. The safety and security of the victims, their families, and all Garo people in Bangladesh must be prioritised, the ACHIK said.

The organisation urged the Government of Bangladesh to take proactive steps to protect its indigenous communities, including the Garo, from violence, discrimination, and marginalization. The international community is closely watching, and it is critical that Bangladesh upholds its commitment to human rights, justice, and equality for all citizens, irrespective of ethnicity.
