Shillong, Mar 14: The Congress protested against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in front of the BJP state office on Thursday
“We reject CAA”, “Protect the Sixth Schedule, Say No to CAA” and “Meghalaya against CAA” – were some of the placards displayed by members of the Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) during the protest.
Later, speaking to reporters, MPYC president Adrian L Chyne said that the CAA is just a vote bank politics of the BJP.
“There are still so many issues and I feel that this is just politics to get vote banks without thinking about the future of the minorities who are oppressed. If it would have been done in a different manner we would have agreed with it but we feel that this is just vote bank politics, it is a politics that is not intended for the benefit of the people of this country,” he said.
“Even though Meghalaya has been exempted, we have to wonder due to the Sixth Schedule, we are protected against this law but we have seen in the years that have passed, the abrogation of article 370, exemption now might mean that later on in the future we become the targets,” Mylliem said
“We feel that we have to protect the Sixth Schedule by protesting against the CAA.”
According to him, “Even if CAA has been passed right now, we can see that India is not ready for the migrants that are to come, they might be lakhs, they might be crores who are coming. We see that in terms of the global poverty index, India ranks at 111 from 125 countries in the world, he said
Similar protests were also held in different parts of Shillong including Khyndailad area.
