Shillong, July 25: Thousands have become victims to ‘AI-powered trading’ in Meghalaya leading to the arrest of a couple in the city.
The arrested persons have been identified as husband-wife duo Aron T Sangma and Bernadeth Sangma from Laban here.
The couple, originally from Resubelpara, North Garo Hills, were arrested on Wednesday and forwarded to judicial custody.
Considering the gravity of the matter, the case was handed over to the crime branch, East Khasi Hills SP Sylvester Nongtnger told reporters on Thursday.
Modus operandi
The temptation begins with the demand for investment ranging from Rs 300 to Rs 5 lakh with double profit offer by the people who man the App called Datameer with the company website https://www.daaisi.com
Datameer was projected as ‘leading the way in AI-powered trading’
Once the investment begins, they ask the investors to try out with Rs 300 for 2 days with an offer of a daily profit of Rs 30 each.
Initially, to build trust, the profit amount and commission were sent to the accounts of the investors. Commission amount was given to beginners to involve more people as part of a chain of investment.
They were also using the picture of A. Balasubramanian who is the Managing Director & CEO of Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC Limited and a stalwart of the mutual fund industry,
However, at a later stage, the withdrawal of profit amount failed many times leading to suspicion by the investors.
Sending trouble, several victims lodged FIRs in Garo Hills and Shillong.
Police suspect that over 10,000 people were cheated in the online scam thereby the victims losing crores of rupees.
Following this, police have started investigation but the website and the App were found to be disconnected.

Way forward
Police have alerted the citizens of the state to verify the investment Apps before falling victims to the scam.
The scam was reported in some parts of the country around six months ago and in the North East, it spread around four months ago.
Those who were duped in Meghalaya also included professionals in various fields.
A police official said greed for money forces people to fall prey to the scam.
