
Shillong, Aug 20: High Court of Meghalaya has asked the state government to take ‘more intensive steps immediately to apprehend the perpetrators of the incidents of violence during the KSU-sponsored rally, and bring them to book.
The division bench comprising Judges W. Diengdoh and H.S. Thangkhiew said a report of the steps taken should be filed on August 24 ( Monday) when the matter will be taken up.
The order was in response to a suo motu PIL taken up by the court on Friday (Aug 20).
The court observed that the PIL has been taken up in view of the ‘unfortunate
incidents that occurred on 19.08.2026, in a public procession by an NGO,
wherein extensive damage to public property has been caused including
government vehicles, out station vehicles, public transport vehicles and
has endangered common citizens including school going children, apart
from statues of national heroes being desecrated’
The Advocate General who is present on behalf of the state respondents has submitted that steps have been taken by the authorities and some office bearers of the NGO have been arrested.
The court wanted more steps to be taken by the government.
