Shillong, May 21: A division bench of the High Court of Meghalaya comprising Chief Justice LP Mukherji and Judge W Diengdoh has granted time for the petitioner of PIL on issues related to city streets, including vending till June 2 to file response.
The next hearing will be held on June 12.
The court observed that the PIL involves identifying street vending areas, relocating areas permitted to be used for street vending, regulation of traffic in general, allocating and relocating parking spaces, clearance of as much road area as possible to allow free movement of vehicles and overall implementation of policies and plans to make the capital of Meghalaya-Shillong region, a modern, clean and well administered city .
“By our order dated 8th May, 2025, we had taken on record the report by the government showing action in terms of our earlier order.
The petitioner was given an opportunity to file a response to the said report by an affidavit by 15th May, 2025 .Today, time is sought on behalf of the petitioner to file this affidavit
We only observe that if the petitioner had any grievance with regard to any policy or plan or implementation of the plan by the government, the response ought to have come by today. The affidavit not having been filed shows that the petitioner has got nothing much to say with regard to the action taken”, the court said.
However. as a last chance the court granted the petitioner an opportunity to bring to the notice of the court any lacuna in the report filed by the government by extending time to fiIe the affidavit till June 2.
