
Shillong, Aug 5: High Court of Meghalaya has examined the report of the special officer dealing with hawkers’ issues and wanted the government to examine the plea of those were not given certificates of vending.
The bench headed by Chief Justice IP Mukerji and Judge W Diengdoh said the court examined the report of the Special Officer, Subhasis Chakrawarty, Senior Advocate appointed by it on July 3
to superintend the exercise of eviction of unlicenced vendors from the Khyndailad area of Shillong and for relocation of licenced vendors in the space provided by the Shillong Municipal Board.
“It appears from the report and the submission made before the court that the exercise has been peaceful and successful. However, the Shillong Roadside Hawkers’ Association has, on 25th July, 2025 and
1st August, 2025 written to the Chief Executive Officer of the Shillong
Municipal Board stating that some eligible vendors had not been issued
certificates of vending. The Special Officer who received copies of those letters, on 29th July, 2025 has written to the Chief Executive Officer of the Shillong Municipal Board to respond to this allegation”, the court said..
Advocate for the Municipal Board assured the court that a proper response in the form of an affidavit will be filed in court
The court said the copies of the report of the special officer should be circulated to all appearing lawyers by August 6.
The court also said the copies of the
report of the response to be filed by the Shillong Municipal Board should be circulated by August 11.
The court will hear the matter on August 13
