Decision on 108 likely in three months; govt preparing for RFP

Shillong, July 24: The state government would decide on the 108 emergency services within three months, said Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on Monday.

Speaking to reporters after meeting 108 workers’ union members, “We hope that at the end of the next three months, we will be able to take some quick decisions.”

Reiterating that the government is not the competent authority to run the 108 services, Lyngdoh said the union had submitted a memorandum with suggestions and requests.

“I promised to send it to the National Health Mission (NHM), which is currently preparing the tender documents. And the requests for proposals are something that’s just been set. The ball is going to start rolling,” she added.

The government also plans to negotiate with the company that wins the request for proposal (RFP). To a query, the minister said the government is yet to call for RFPs and is preparing for it.

“Now, as is done in several other states, government distances itself from engaging in this kind of a business of serving someone through the 108 ambulances system,” she said, adding, “We will… try to protect the services of these individuals.”
