DIET teachers’ recruitment, annual MTET on JNC demand list

Members submit memorandum to DERT director

Shillong, Oct 29: In its memorandum to the Directorate of Educational and Research Training (DERT), the Jaintia National Council (JNC) raised multiple issues concerning the Education Department.

In its memorandum to DERT director RS Manners on Tuesday, JNC said the two vacant teachers’ positions at the District Institute of Education and Training, Thadlaskien (West Jaintia Hills), need to be filled up for better quality of teaching.

“There are 14 teachers now after the transfer of two teachers. The existing teachers are struggling to manage the workload. Insufficient teacher availability at the institute will compromise the quality of education and training,” said JNC general secretary Wanshwa Suting.

On the infrastructure front, Suting said the DIET building does not have a proper toilet for teachers and students.

JNC also mentioned that the Meghalaya Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET) should be conducted annually to reduce the burden on aspiring teachers who have completed their D.El.Ed and B.Ed.

Lastly, JNC requested that the department release the student association scholarship.

Manners informed the JNC members that the recruitment process would soon be initiated. She assured JNC that the MTET may become an annual exam from 2025. On the scholarship, she said the department has sanctioned the amount and the money will soon be released.
