Shillong, Apr 29: East Khasi Hills district administration will meet Shillong Cantonment Board (SCB) officials to discuss about the issue of illegal settlers at Lum Survey, likely on Tuesday.
A delegation led by the president of Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) Roykupar Synrem met Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong in this regard.
“We were informed that the DC will hold a meeting with the representatives of the SCB on the issue tomorrow,” Synrem said.
According to a memorandum submitted to Tynsong, the authorities concerned under the state government should take prompt action to evict the illegal settlers and demolish the illegal settlement at the earliest.
He reminded that on April 25, the HYC had conducted a spot inquiry on the existence of illegal settlement of people in a plot of land located opposite the Fire and Emergency Station, Iewduh (Bara Bazar), Shillong after receiving numerous complaints from the people.
“During the inspection, we found that about 80-100 households were staying in the plot of land by constructing huts used of plastics and other scrap materials and further on enquiry, we knew that these people were illegally staying there without any permission from the Cantonment Board, Shillong Municipal Board or any other authority,” he said.
“The condition of the place is deplorable and unfit for human habitation and is an eyesore for the city of Shillong and the state as a whole. We were also informed that this place is a hub of illegal activities like supply and trafficking of illicit drugs in the city and also a safe haven for illegal immigrants from other countries,”he said.
Following this, the MeECL disconnected power supply to the residents.
