Soon after the complaint, Director General of state police Amitabh Ranjan removed Banik and attached him to the police headquarters in Agartala. The officer in charge of the Women’s Police Station claimed that an investigation has begun into the allegations as per the provisions of law.

Das alleged that she got married in March 2012 to Banik, who was then a Deputy Superintendent of Police. Three months after the wedding, Banik and his mother began mentally torturing her, demanding money. They even resorted to physical abuse.

“They demanded Rs 50,000 to pay off a car instalment. My mother gave the money to Uttam’s mother but the situation did not improve, rather deteriorated,” Das alleged, adding that she refrained from discussing the issue with others as it was a family matter. She tried to resolve it, but it was fruitless.
