Shillong, June 5: Following the recurring incidents of illegal coal mining and accidents, the Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh wanted the government not to tolerate any kind of illegal activities.

Lyngdoh, who is also the president of the UDP, said, “Be it illegal coal mining or anything, the government should not tolerate any kind of illegal activities.”

He told this to reporters on Saturday on the sidelines of a tree plantation drive on World Environment Day.

Five miners are still strapped inside a mine in East Jaintia Hills district.

Asserting that the incident is a case of illegal mining of coal, the Speaker said the Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui has already assured action against those who are involved in illegal coal mining.

The Speaker said it was upto the government to respond to the demand of the Congress for an independent inquiry to end the illegal coal trade.

“Illegal coal mining has been happening right from 10 – 20 years ago but one should not allow it, one should not encourage and any government has to take action,” the Speaker added.
