Education board to streamline recruitment

Shillong, Nov 16: The state cabinet has decided to permanently constitute the Meghalaya Education Recruitment Board (MERB).

Briefing reporters on the matter on Thursday, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said  there are about 187 vacancies in the Secondary, Higher Secondary and Higher and Technical education levels for which the vacancies were not filled for 3 to 4 years.

“The decision to constitute the Board is to streamline and expedite the recruitment process to a great extent. The Board will be directed to complete the recruitment process within 3 to 6 months. This will also be the overall arching Board that will take care of recruitment for all education-related matters”, the chief minister said.

Fiscal responsibility 

Cabinet has also approved the amendment of the Meghalaya Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management Act, 2006. The Act was also amended last year as per Centre’s  permission to allow states to increase the budget borrowings based on reforms taken by states on an annual basis. Last year based on the reforms taken by various departments, “our borrowing limit was increased by 4% and for this year, based on the power reforms there will be 0.5% increase in the budget borrowing”, the chief minister said.

Labour dept renamed 

Cabinet has also approved the renaming of the Labour Department as the Department of Labour, Employment & Skill Development.
