Meghalaya Games concludes; Dy CM says state fit to host National Games

Shillong, Jan 25: East Khasi Hills district became the overall champion of the 6th Meghalaya Games with a medal tally of 381, including 149 gold.

East Khasi Hills was followed by West Jaintia Hills with 108 medals and Ri Bhoi with 104.

The 6th edition of the Games ended on Saturday at the Kiang Nangbah Football Stadium in Jowai. It marked the end of a week-long extravaganza that brought together athletes from all corners of the state, engaging in 29 sports and boasting a commendable participation of over 3,500 spirited contenders.

The 6th Meghalaya Games has created milestones of many firsts. With the participation of 3,500 athletes, it was the highest till date. There were 29 sporting events, including four demonstration sports. For the first time, seven para-athletes took part in the Meghalaya Games expressing their grit and determination. As stated by John F Kharshiing, “95% of the athletes from Garo Hills experienced West Jaintia Hills for the first time during the 6th Meghalaya Games, 2025”

The ceremony began with the state anthem of Meghalaya. The Meghalaya Games mascot, ‘U Kiang’, the Clouded Leopard, roared into the scene, adding a touch of joy as it interacted with the gathered guests and athletes.

Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar shared his views on the success of the Meghalaya Games. “We’re proud to say we’re fit to host the National Games,” he said.

He added that the Sports Department has seen significant growth under the MDA government, with increased budget and infrastructure development. The construction of the Mawkhanu football stadium, set to be India’s largest, will make Meghalaya the soccer capital of India.
