‘End to harassment’: Hawkers in city welcome central law
Shillong, May 19:The hawkers under the banner Meghalaya & Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers & Street Vendors Association ((MGSPHSVA) has welcomed the move to introduce central law on hawking.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday at Bimola point where hawkers’ movement took place, it’s leader Angela Rangad said under the state law, the hawkers were harassed and their goods seized.
With the central law, the hawkers will have greater participation in the town vending commitee, she said, adding that besides certain regulations on hawking, there will be protection to hawkers.
According to Rangad, the era of neglect and harassment by the state government will end with the introduction of the central law.
During the hearing of the petition filed by the hawkers’ body, on Wednesday in the High Court of Meghalaya, the state government informed the court about the decision to do away with ‘The Meghalaya Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014’.
The state cabinet will issue an ordinance in this regard.
With the state law being repealed, a set of rules in accordance with the Central statute will be brought into effect.
