Expensive mock drills fail in actual fire control measures in city

Shillong, Oct 14: The narrow roads in the city coupled with large number of shops and vendors on the road side made fire control measures difficult on Saturday afternoon as smoke billowed out of the buildings at Thana Road.

The fire incident was reported in the afternoon at a furniture shop  (old video parlour) at Thana Road and it spread to nearby Singhania complex close to Payal, police said.

This comes a fortnight after the fire incident at Keating Road.

According to early reports, blast of cylinder appears to be the reason for the fire incident at Thana Road.

Several fire tenders of Meghalaya Fire service  struggled to move forward due to the narrow way in Thana Road.

The CRPF personnel and the police prevented the movement of vehicles, vendors and pedestrians from Khyndailad police point towards Thana Road.

The government also rushed in personnel of JAT regiment to douse the fire.

Sources said the periodic and expensive mock drills have not brought any desired results in addressing the emergency situations though crores of rupees were spent on such exercises to mitigate disasters.
