Farmers’ body seeks KHADC help to end exploitation
Shillong, Jan 6: The Khasi-Jaintia Farmers Association on Monday met the KHADC CEM Pyniaid Syiem and sought his intervention on the deduction of weight of the farmers’ produce by middle men and traders.
Briefing reporters after meeting the CEM, the association’s advisor Philip Marwein said that the CEM assured the delegation that the matter will be resolved.
The CEM will lead a delegation to meet the Governor on Tuesday to get his assent on the Khasi Hills District (Establishment, Management and Control of Markets) Rules 2024 which can regulate the illegal practices affecting the farmers, including deduction of weight of their produce.
According to Marwein, the state government has failed to protect the farmers and hence he hoped that the district council would be able to address their plight.
