Shillong, Apr 6: A fire destroyed water pipes of Public Health Engineering (PHE) department’s storage area at Shanmari, Lumshyiap, on Saturday afternoon.
Forest fire may have spread to the storage area resulting in destruction to pipes around 2 pm.

According to PHE Executive Engineer A. Sunn, the loss would be around Rs 85 lakh. High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipes were damaged.
Rangbah Shnong of Lumshyiap, Phira Khongphai, who was informed about the fire around 3 pm, told reporters that he called the Fire and Emergency Services and eight to ten fire tenders were engaged in dousing the fire.
“We came to know children were playing in the nearby forest and the fire and may have spread to the PHE store”, he said.
