Fire incident at Shillong Engineering College

Shillong, Jan 15: A fire incident was reported from the third floor of Shillong Government College of Engineering on January 15 around 7.24 am.

According to the FIR, the security guard on duty noticed smoke billowing from the windows of a room located on the third floor. He immediately alerted the Principal at 7:26 AM.

The affected room was being utilised by the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, for the storage of sports items/equipment. The room was locked at the time the fire broke out.

Upon receiving the information, the Principal rushed to the campus.

While waiting for professional help, the college attempted to douse the flames using all available fire extinguishers on-site. However, as the fire was concentrated near the locked door and was spreading rapidly.

The fire service personnel arrivedĀ  20 minutes later. Due to their prompt action, the fire was successfully extinguished and prevented from spreading to other parts of the building.

The exact cause of the fire is unknown. As stated by the security guard, there was no sign of fire when he went to the top floor around 6.50 am for switching off the campus lights.
