Shillong, Aug 20: Police on Wednesday arrested five Hynniewtrep National Youth Movement (HNYM) members for extortion on the highway in Ri Bhoi.

A written FIR was received on 19th August 2025 to the effect that while driving through Umdihar-Nongpoh-Umsning section of NH-6, the tourist taxi drivers were often stopped by a group of anti-social elements led by one Sparly Syngkli at night and an amount ranging from Rs. 3000/- to Rs. 6500/- was extorted from them for carrying non-tribal passengers including tourists to various parts of Meghalaya. All these passengers had valid documents and had been cleared to enter Meghalaya by Anti-Infiltration Check Post, Byrnihat. Apart from extortion, these anti-social elements were also harassing and physically assaulting the drivers and passengers. Due to these criminal activities, the taxi drivers, apart from facing huge inconvenience, were suffering from significant financial losses and mental distress.
Accordingly, a case was registered vide Nongpoh PS Case No. 90(08)2025 u/s 61(2)/126(2)/308(4)/310(2)/351(2)3(5) BNS and is being investigated. During investigation, several photographs and video recordings were found which confirmed the allegations.
Multiple bank transactions from the bank account of taxi drivers to the personal bank accounts of these individuals were also traced. The below-mentioned members of Hynniewtrep National Youth Movement (HNYM) were found to be involved in the offence and were arrested.
1. Ricky Tangsang, S/o Lt. Manjit Singh, Sajer, Nongpoh. (Member).
2. Sparly Syngkli, S/o R. Syngkli, R/o Nongkhrah, Nongpoh (Chairman, Anti Influx Cell).
3. Donboklang Kharbani, S/o B. Langstieh, R/o Mawroh, Nongpoh (President, Nongpoh circle).
4. Aiborlang Marbaniang, S/o T. Hujon, R/o Umjarasi, Nongpoh (Working President, Nongpoh circle)
5. Krius Pariong, S/o Lt. D. Marwein, R/o Pahamrioh, Nongpoh. (Member).
On further enquiry, it has been found that Ricky Tangsang and his accomplices were allegedly involved in several cases of theft, extortion etc. as mentioned below.

5. Umiam PS Case No. 57(07)2024 u/s 310(2) BNS.
6. Laban PS Case No. 29(05)2024 379 IPC.
All the arrested individuals have been forwarded to court.
