Food safety panel holds training for street vendors

Shillong, Aug 27: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), in collaboration with the Department of Food Safety, Meghalaya and the Federation of Street Vendors of India, along with Nestlé India under the FoSTaC (Food Safety Training & Certification) initiative, organized a “Training for Street Food Vendors” on Wednesday at the Gurdwara, Shillong, under the theme “Serve Safe Food.”

The programme was inaugurated by B.L. Pakynteiñ, Director of Tourism who graced the event as Chief Guest.

In her address, Pakynteiñ highlighted that street food vendors play an important role in society by providing livelihood opportunities as well as services to the public. She emphasized that such training equips vendors with essential knowledge on hygiene, safe food handling and consumer trust. She further urged the vendors to strictly follow food safety and cleanliness standards so that Meghalaya can be recognized as a destination for safe and hygienic food, which would also attract more tourists.

Other speakers at the event included  Surojit Mukherjee, Head – Branch Corporate Affairs, Nestlé India Ltd., D.B.S. Mukhim, Deputy Commissioner (Food Safety) – Enforcement, Meghalaya, and representatives from the Art of Living, Shillong.

The training programme is part of ongoing efforts to empower street food vendors with better awareness, responsibility and skills on food safety and hygiene – ultimately benefiting both the local consumers and the tourism sector in Meghalaya.
