The stand of the chief minister is after the pressure groups including the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) have carried out work permit check in parts of the city stating that the government is not implementing the inner line permit (ILP) and Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) to check influx.

Stating that there is no work permit system, the chief minister said the workers will have to register with the labour department and the contractors who bring them can also ensure this.

“Nobody is authorized to check the papers, nobody can. Of course there are incidents where individual organizations go and check but that is not as per law. Therefore, they are completely on the wrong side of the law” Conrad said.
