Four labourers, driver assaulted in city

Eleven held in connection with attacks

Shillong,June 30: Police arrested six persons for assaulting labourers in the city on Thursday.

According to police, four workers from Assam had gone to do tile work in a house in Jaiaw, on Wednesday.

Around 6.10 pm on their return in a taxi driven by a local person, they were stopped by some persons on a bridge in Umpohliew.

All the five persons, including the taxi driver, were assaulted by the goons with iron hammer and four of them sustained grievous injuries.

The VDP members intervened and chased the goons on the way to Mawlai Phudmuri, Madan Heh and later one of them was arrested.

Thanks to the intervention of the police,the victims were taken to the hospital and one of them was admitted.

Later, with the help of locality residents, police arrested five others. Three of them are juveniles.

Police claimed that the arrested persons were part of the gang of bikers involved in the assault incident at Jaiaw on June 24.

On Wednesday night, one more person involved in the June 24 incident was arrested taking the tally of the accused to 11.

DGP visits Jaiaw 

On Thursday evening, DGP LR Bishnoi and other police officials walked to Jaiaw and adjoining areas and assessed the security situation.

The DGP spoke to the residents and assured support.
