Four-member family buried alive in mud after landslide in WJH

Shillong, Oct 8: An entire family was buried alive in mud in West Jaintia Hills due to rain-induced landslide on Sunday morning.

According to the police, the bodies of the father,  the mother and their two children were recovered.

They have been identified as Bianki Phawa( 31), Pynyanai Ryngkhlem (25), Edify Ryngkhlem (6) and Wilaradoi Ryngkhlem (3)

Police said due to the incessant rain in most parts of the district, a minor landslide occurred in Pynthor Langtein village. Report was received around 6.30 am from the headman of the village that around 5.30 am, a resident of the village saw the house of his neighbour destroyed in landslide and was partially buried by mud.

Police personnel who reached the spot found that the house belonging to Biangki Phawa was damaged by the mud due to landslide. With the help of the villagers, the portion of the mud was cleared and later they found that the father, mother and two children died due to the incident, police said.

Their bodies were retrieved and after observing legal formalities and on obtaining post mortem exemption, they were  handed over to the relatives for the last rites, the police added.
