Shillong, Oct 14: The members of Garo Hills Press & Media Association have condemned the interference of the executive and the administrative organ of South Garo Hills against smooth functioning of the media in raising independent voice of the people in response to anti-social practices, irregularities or any scam in public fora.
In a joint statement, Sanggra M. Marak President GHPMA and Dalseng A. Sangma General Secretary GHPMA said, “We would like to place on record that though the media is the most important organ of a democratic setup and is the backbone of citizenry as being the fourth pillar of democracy such act of obstruction in independent reporting and threatening by the administrative and executive organ of the state to the media houses and journalists of Garo Hills associated with fair and transparent reporting, is highly condemnable and needs immediate action”.
The protest comes in the wake of summoning of a reporter by the Chokpot Block Development Officer in the aftermath of the flood situation where there are people who are still affected and seeking help.
