Shillong, Feb 27: Though the NPP is effecting a change of guard in GHADC by way of proposing the name of deputy chairman Albinush Marak replacing Rakesh Newar Sangma as the CEM, the core issue of who can contest the council polls is yet to be resolved.
As there is no bar on contesting the GHADC polls, any resident of the region can join the fray.
FKJGP leader Pritam Marak, who is part of the groups demanding the removal of Rakesh, recently stressed the need of having a separate electoral roll to prevent non-Garos from contesting the GHADC polls.
He also wanted the codification of Garo customary laws.
In Khasi Hills, though there is no bar, traditionally, non- Khasis do not participate in the KHADC polls.
When asked, Rakesh said the GHADC is working on the pending issue of separate electoral rolls.
The KHADC CEM, T Chyne said there should be a uniform law preventing others fromĀ contesting the council polls all over the state.
