Shillong, Jan 29: The outgoing chairperson of Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC), Justice (Retd) T Vaiphei, said on Thursday that Meghalaya can follow the example of Assam by taking the views of the commission before giving promotions to police officers.

Speaking to this reporter after his farewell function held at the MHRC office here, Vaiphei said consulting the human rights commission before promoting the police officers will be a positive step in arresting human rights violations by the security forces.
Assam takes the views of the Human Rights Commission in this regard. Meghalaya can also follow this”, he added.

Vaiphei also favoured providing financial powers to the commission to avoid delay in getting funds for necessary works.
Vaiphei, who served as the head of the commission for nearly six years, informed that the commission disposed of 90 cases and around 170 cases are pending.
As a one-man judicial inquiry commission, Vaiphei had also probed the controversial killing of former HNLC general secretary Cherishstarfield Thangkhiew and the Mukroh firing incident.
Earlier during the farewell function, members of the commission, B Giri, H Nongpluh and ex-member PJP Hanaman acknowledged the contribution of the chairperson and recollected their association with him.
Farewell speeches and a song presented by the staff marked the occasion.
