Govt concerned over militancy & border dispute

Shillong, Aug 26: Chief Minister Conrad  Sangma has said while intelligence inputs suggest various activities, it’s premature to conclude that regrouping of militants is happening.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Sangma said the  situation across the border in Bangladesh has changed significantly over the past year, leading to emerging dynamics that require continuous monitoring.
Sangma said the government receives multiple intelligence inputs daily, which need to be verified before drawing conclusions.
Some groups that have been active in the past are more akin to dacoits than militant organisations, he said.
“We have to realise and remember that situation across the border in Bangladesh is not the same as it was last year. So obviously there’s a tendency and I don’t want to go too much into details because it’s a matter of national security, so I cannot talk too much in details, but all I can say, is that different activities and different things across the border are also emerging which are changing the dynamics of the overall situation,” he said.
“Now to say that that hundred percent regrouping is happening, no, we cannot conclude to that, absolutely not but are we getting intel about movements, yes, we are. Every time we get intel we try to find out what is happening and then we find out that there were these two, three groups, there were more dacoits then the chapters closed out there. So this kind of activity here and there keep coming to us, intel keeps coming to us on the basis of this intelligent information to conclude that there’s a regrouping, is not correct at all,” the the chief minister said.
Sangma said the government is committed to continuously monitoring the situation and taking necessary actions to ensure peace and security in the state.
Regarding DGP’s statement, the CM said , “I think DG was trying to say exactly that we had been getting inputs of this thing and I guess the Press that time just took that first part and did not talk the whole picture.
So, I’m giving you the whole picture, we get multiple intels every day. These multiple intels have to be verified, till we don’t verify it, we cannot conclude and say that it is really grouping but is there information coming in, yes information, comes every day.”
“Now situation has become more critical because of the situation in Bangladesh and therefore those situations are something that we have to continuously monitor. So that’s the situation right now,” he said.
The chief minister also said his government is committed to finding solutions to the inter-state border issue for ensuring long lasting peace.
Sangma said there was a lull in the border talks between Meghalaya and Assam for the last 46 years.
“Finally, we  the MDA government started the talks. I guess you can give us that much credit. it is not so simple, it is complicated. So whatever lull that was there for 46 years, we try to make it better and we will continue to work on it,” he added.
